This project marks the design of the first store for the launch of BAO BAO ISSEY MIYAKE. Composed of triangular pieces that transform from flat to three-dimensional depending on what’s inside, the product reflects ISSEY MIYAKE’s signature mix of functionality and playfulness. The store design aimed to express these qualities clearly and directly. To bring the product’s unique character into focus, we rethought the basic functions of retail display—hanging, placing, lining up—and integrated them into a single, flexible system. In a compact 10-square-meter space, we developed a mechanism where wooden rods can be inserted at any position along wall-mounted rails, enabling multiple display variations with a single component. Each rod supports individual hanging, and when arranged in multiples, functions as a shelf. Adjusting the number and placement of rods creates rhythm and coherence across the display. Some rods include built-in lighting and instantly illuminate when connected to powered rails, serving as under-shelf lighting. The rod ends are also designed to hold magnetic sheets for pricing and product information. By consolidating all store functions—from spatial configuration to graphic presentation—into one seamless element, the system offers both adaptability and clarity, highlighting the distinct presence of BAO BAO ISSEY MIYAKE products.
