"Heritage in Motion"

Located in the heart of Chengdu, Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu is a complex imbued with a rich atmosphere, built low-rise around Daci Temple, which has a history spanning over 1,600 years. The site preserves and restores traditional courtyards and buildings, with the passage of time woven into the very fabric of the place and carried forward to the present day. The design aims to harmonize with this historic land, creating a space where the characteristics of both the store and its surrounding environment mutually enhance each other. Chengdu has long been known as a production area of fine clay for ceramics, with bricks traditionally used extensively in many buildings. For this project, we reused "Gu Zhuan" — weathered bricks salvaged from decommissioned buildings — as the primary material for the store. The store’s open glass façade is wrapped once again in bricks, with openings thoughtfully placed to evoke a sense of connection between inside and outside. Glass shelves are inserted within the uneven brick openings to display products as if they are floating in midair. Beyond these, fragments of Sichuan-style architecture can be glimpsed, seamlessly blending the history of the land with the cutting-edge technology of BAO BAO ISSEY MIYAKE. Furthermore, subtle flickering lamps hidden within the bricks, alongside stairwells adorned with modern interpretations of traditional andon lanterns, interweave old and new narratives, quietly evoking the continuity of history and deepening a unique experience that can only be felt here.
